As PR professionals, we are experts at pitching stories on behalf of our clients. When it comes to telling our own stories, however, we often struggle to shine the best light on our accomplishments and career goals, especially in this evolving career landscape. To help our members navigate these challenges, our chapter hosted “How to Pitch Yourself in Today’s Marketplace” at the UCF Downtown campus in November.

Our outstanding panel, Roy Reid, APR, CPRC, MCPC; Tanya Hopper, CIR, CDR; Roger Lear and Juliette Gebken Mayi, APR, provided key insights and thoughtful advice on developing your personal brand, making yourself searchable to recruiters, standing out in a competitive landscape, and so much more. Our president Valerie Moses, MBA, served as our moderator and facilitator throughout the program.

Here are a few key takeaways from the panel:

  • Always be learning or earning. If you’re not, it’s time to go.

  • Develop a strong online presence by sharing content, posting comments, and providing insights and expertise. Your resume shows a moment in time. Your online presence shows who you are as you continue to grow and develop, how you express yourself, and the relationships you have built.

  • Determine what you truly enjoy doing. If you don’t know, take a personality assessment to get started.

  • If it doesn’t meet your purpose, don’t pursue it.

  • Create your own circle of experts and support, especially when you are starting your own business.
